(Single from album, “Coming Up”)
This little ditty was, for a long time, simply just 'a little ditty' for me...how silly of me for failing to see it's genius, brit-pop poetry blazing like a guitar serenading inferno, erupting like a volcanic burst of emotion - right before my very ears...
For starters, Brett Anderson has that nasal quality to voice. As Bowie once put it when describing Dylan'd scrawl, it is such that it resembles 'sand and glue'. Funnily enough, the raw scratchy sound of Anderson's voice is more Bowie than anything else, perhaps with a sardonic side of Moz in there as well. Someone once described "Trash" to me as the song Morrissey wishes he'd written...this is probably true...
Putting it simply, it's a great love song and one filled with the 90s sarcasm that only a great love song can be made up of. Chants of 'the tacky bracelets' and 'the ties in our hair', 'our kookiness' and 'nowhere sounds', the track is raw. The lyrics are truthful, realistic and unflattering, but they're also entirely heartfelt, expressive and full of emotion.
Similarly the guitars weave in and around the flanged up backing of the bass and drums ecstatically, with speed and also with patience, creating a unique kind of pacing which, depending on your mood, could be fast or slow. It's a druggy feeling. Then there's the harmonica/electric guitar solo at 2:20 - very "Hand In Glove" if you ask me, and if you haven't heard that song either, you'll want to look it up.
This is only a quick one from me, something I thought I should let you know about as it re-appeared on my iPod's shuffle. It's a great track, and it doesn't have to be your new favourite. But give it a listen, and certainly, if you don't do it now, make sure you do it very soon...
