(Single from soundtrack album, "American Idiot: The Original Broadway Cast Recording")
Lots of Green Day at the moment...so what? Its my blog, I'll do as I please! Currently, with the release of "¡Dos!", the second album in the band's highly energetic, musical triptych, Green Day are on my radar. This song crept up on shuffle the other day, and it reminded me of yet another side to Green Day that I just love...
If you read the "Amy" review from earlier this week, you'll know all about Green Day's alternative history - and if you didn't, go read it now; that's another epic song! This track is taken from the Broadway musical adaptation of the band's highly successful 2004 pop-punk, rock opera - for starters, there is no way, no freaking way, that that is going to work; leave "American Idiot" alone; let commercial radio destroy it, and most importantly, don't engineer and self-produce your own masterpiece's suicide. I don't know just how badly the stage show went, however, this song, recorded by the band especially for the production is perhaps one of the best Green Day songs of the last decade...
The track opens loudly, with a bright, acoustic wave of heart warming chord progression. 25 seconds in, and the full rhythm section pounds in, lolling slowly around like a joyful and drunken last waltz. There's a tambourine knocking about in the background at the bridge section, and the solo gives the whole sound a kind of A7X "Dear God" kind of feel, with plenty of slide and loads of attitude.
This carries on for the whole song, and the lyrics which accompany it, are simply divine. Ok, its a love song; some of the sharp wit of the band's proper punk songs will evidently be missing. But its worth it. This track has real soul and the words, corny though they may seem, are pretty perfect as far as a love song goes. Its not that bad...
This is really a pretty quick one from me. Check out this song. I know I've been pretty Green Day heavy of late, but hey, they're a great band, and this a defining moment for them. It rocks, in its own kind of special way, and so long as it does, I think I'll always like it...
