This song is teeming with staple indie-rock qualities; a guitar line buttered-up heavily with thick reverb effects, a crunching, trebly bass line that won’t sit still, folky male vocals and double-layered backing-vocals during the chorus. There’s nothing wrong with that as such, but we have heard it all before. In fact, these qualities are so staple, that they actually detract from the possibility that the chord progression is new; it really does sound like you’ve heard it a million times before, even on the first listen. Strangely, “Formaldehyde”, shares a few too many characteristics with Rudimental’s “Right Here” in presenting the listener with something entirely bearable and praise-worthy on it’s own merits, but otherwise forgettable and indistinguishable from the sound of the crowd. Editors need to step it up if they want to get Vheard…
